The Tax Collectors Office is responsible for the collection
of real and personal property taxes.
Real Estate Tax Bills cover the current
calendar year. Example: Tax Bills issued in July of 2010, cover the period
from January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2010.
Tangible Property Tax Bills cover the
prior calendar year. The Tax
Bills issued in July of 2010, cover the period from January 1, 2009 to December 31,
2009.
Motor Vehicle Tax Bills cover the prior
calendar year. Tax Bills issued in July of
2010, cover vehicles registered from January 1, 2009 to December 31, 2009.
Tax Bills over $100.00 are payable in
four quarterly installments due on July 1st, October 1st, January 1st, and April
1st; however, you are given
the entire month without penalties.
Late payments will be assessed
interest of 6% per annum from July 1st.
Tax Bills under $100.00 are due by July1st.
Real Estate Tax Rates Are:
1. Class 1 - Residential Real Estate: $32.00/thousand @50%
assessment
2. Class 2 - Commercial/Industrial/Mixed Use: $39.40/thousand @50%
assessment
3. Class 3 - Tangible Personal Property: $38.25/thousand
4. Class 4 - Motor Vehicles: $30.20/thousand
Failure to receive a tax bill does not
excuse the nonpayment of the tax or affect its validity or any proceedings for
the
collection thereof, according to Rhode Island General Laws, RIGL 44-7-7.
All mailed payments must be post-marked no
later than the last day of the month to avoid penalties. Taxes paid
after
the last day of the month will be subject to a penalty of 6% per annum,
retroactive to July 1, 2009, on the unpaid quarter(s).
Credit/Debit card payments are accepted on
line at WWW.RIEGOV.COM only. To access
your account online,
you will need your account number and pin number, which is located on the top
right-hand side of your bill. (VISA/MASTERCARD)
For your convenience, there is a mail slot
at the Town Hall Clerk's door for check's only (do not deposit cash). The
slot
is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If you would like a receipt,
please enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope.
